UN Security Council Rejects Russia, China Proposal
(MENAFN) In a recent development at the UN Security Council, a resolution jointly backed by Moscow and Beijing, which aimed to prolong Iran's sanctions relief for another six months, was rejected.
This outcome sets the stage for the reimposition of restrictions linked to Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
The measure, which was put to a vote on Friday, received support from only four nations—China, Russia, Pakistan, and Algeria.
In contrast, nine member states voted against the draft, while two abstained. As a result of the vote, the sanctions that had been lifted as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015 between Iran and major global powers, are scheduled to be reinstated from midnight GMT on Saturday.
This decision follows a recent move by three JCPOA participants—France, Germany, and the UK—who announced a month ago that they had activated the “snapback mechanism.”
This clause allows for the restoration of sanctions in response to what they described as Iran’s “significant non-performance” and repeated breaches of the agreement.
Speaking at the UNSC session, Russian deputy envoy to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, condemned the actions of Paris, Berlin, and London, stating that Moscow “categorically rejects” their claim to possess the authority to initiate the snapback mechanism.
He further argued that by opposing the extension of sanctions relief, Western nations had “definitively demonstrated that all of their assurances about their focus on arriving at a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear program issue for all of these years, were mere noise.”
