UN senior official reaffirms support for Somalia’s sovereignty
Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations, briefed the Security Council during an emergency session on Israel’s recent recognition of Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state.
Khiari emphasized that the Security Council “has repeatedly affirmed respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence, and unity of Somalia,” citing the most recent reaffirmation in Resolution 2809 (2025) adopted on 23 December. He called on both Somalia and Somaliland to “engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue” and urged them to avoid any actions that could escalate tensions.
Somalia’s UN envoy, Abukar Dahir Osman, speaking on behalf of his country and the A3+ group (Algeria, Guyana, and Sierra Leone), condemned Israel’s recognition, describing it as a “flagrant assault on the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia.” He stressed that Somaliland is “legally incapable of entering into any agreement, arrangement, or recognition with another country.”
